When Does Discipline in School Border on Cruelty?

The complaint against Collegiate Academies, the Charter Management Organization that runs Carver Collegiate, Sci Academy and Carver Prep, represents 20 students, 12 parents, and one teacher.The complaint alleges that the policies and practices violate the students’ right to an education by constantly kicking them out, as well as laws that prevent schools from suspending students without documentation, due process, or properly notifying parents. There are also violations of laws related to students with special needs, the complaint charges.

The fact is that much of the time jurors are mere pawns in a game of chicken between opposing lawyers. Which side will cave first? In a criminal case, it’s a question of whether the prosecution or the defense will be the first to offer a plea bargain that the other can accept. In a civil case, it’s whether the plaintiff or the defendant will be the first to offer a settlement congenial to both.

After $8.5 Billion Settlement, Millions of Homeowners Will Receive Relief

In light of a recent $8.5 billion settlement between federal bank regulators and 10 big banks, 3.8 million homeowners can expect to get a check in the mail. The agreement, announced Monday, calls for $3.3 billion in direct payments to eligible homeowners – people who had home loans with one of the 10 banks in the agreement and who were in some stage of foreclosure in 2009 and 2010. Another $5.2 billion is set aside for other forms of relief to homeowners, including loan modifications.
