Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler and the Modern Feminist Discourse

Melinda Parks

And so it seems appropriate that Lena Dunham and Amy Poehler, influential female actors and writers in their respected realms of comedy, would choose this year to publish memoirs detailing their experiences as women in entertainment. Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned, released in September, and Poehler’s Yes Please, published a month later, build on the now well-established trend of intimate autobiographies penned by female entertainers. In fact, in her preface, Poehler cites the memoirs of comedians like Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Silverman, and Rachel Dratch as inspiration for her own writing.

‘Admission,’ ‘The Gatekeepers’ Arrive on DVD, Blu-ray

Forrest Hartman

What’s a romantic comedy to do when it is neither romantic nor comedic? When that film is “Admission,” it plunges forward drunkenly, hoping to overcome its inadequacies with goodwill created by the cast. Thankfully for director Paul Weitz (“American Pie,” “Little Fockers”) that cast contains Tina Fey, Paul Rudd and Lily Tomlin, a group that would make a line at the post office more appealing.

Literary Flashback: Reading ‘This Is Where I Leave You’

Kimberly Tolleson

As one might expect, when all these semi-estranged siblings and their provocative mother are forced to be under the same roof for seven days, shenanigans, fights, heartfelt moments, and confessions ensue. At the outset, it all feels a little too set up and predictable, almost a bad knockoff of Jonathan Franzen’s novel The Corrections. Many characters have a too-familiar feel to them.

‘Jack Reacher,’ ‘Mama’ Arrive on DVD, Blu-ray

“Jack Reacher” has a lot of things going for it, but a nuanced script and reasonable character development aren’t among them. The movie – based on the Lee Child novel “One Shot” – revolves around its title character, a former military police officer who plays by his own rules. Set in Pittsburgh, the film starts with a mass shooting where a trained sniper methodically assassinates five people, then drives away unnoticed.

Is '30 Rock' Losing Steam?

Vivian Gomez

Since it premiered, 30 Rock has garnered praise from both critics and fans alike as one of the smartest and funniest shows on television today. It was difficult for people not to fall in love with endearingly nerdy workaholic Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), producer and head writer of TGS with Tracy Jordon, who has to deal with her hard-boiled, no-nonsense boss, Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), the show’s stars, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski) and Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), and her writers.
