‘Belfast,’ ‘West Side Story’ Are Lead Contenders in Critics Choice Award Nominations

The Critics Choice Association announced nominees for its film category on Monday, with Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story and Kenneth Branagh’s intimate drama Belfast leading the pack. Both films garnered 11 nominations.

 

Belfast, which tells the story of an Irish family living amidst the turmoil of the Troubles, received nominations for Best Picture, Best Acting Ensemble and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Branagh. The film also received numerous individual acting and technical awards. Likewise, West Side Story was nominated for Best Picture, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director (Spielberg) and additional acting and technical awards.

 

Other high-profile nominees include the science-fiction epic Dune (10 nominations), brooding Western The Power of the Dog (10 nominations), coming-of-age film Licorice Pizza (eight nominations), Guillermo del Toro thriller Nightmare Alley (eight nominations), sports biopic King Richard (six nominations), doomsday satire Don’t Look Up (six nominations) and real-life social drama House of Gucci (four nominations).

 

Critics Choice Award winners will be announced January 9m 2022, during a live broadcast on the CW and TBS channels. For a complete list of film nominees see below.
