Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner shares her expertise and offers simple tips to boost the first meal of the day.</p> <p> </p> <p>"The name breakfast means to 'break the fast' that happens when you don't eat overnight," explains Blatner. "Because your mind and body are waking up, you need to give it the right fuel for the day."</p> <p> </p> <p>Eating a sizable breakfast, a modest lunch and light dinner can help fuel your body and work positively with your metabolism as well. This is where the saying, "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper" comes from.</p> <p> </p> <p>Blatner says eating a wholesome breakfast packed with nutrients helps you maintain energy and peak brain function, something you need for work and kids need at school. She also notes that the right breakfast works with your natural metabolic process throughout the day, and it can have a positive impact on weight.</p> <p> </p> <p>"Skipping breakfast puts your body in a panic mode, wondering when it will be getting its next meal," says Blatner. "If you go too long without eating, it can cause you to overeat when you do finally eat, and your body wants to store those excess calories rather than burning them consistently throughout the day. This can also cause peaks and pits with energy levels."</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/3breakfast.jpg" style="height:416px; width:625px" /></p> <p> </p> <p>Eating breakfast is a smart idea for the present, but it also may have a positive health impact in the future, too. A recent study published in the <em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology</em> found there was an increased risk of cardiovascular-related death, especially due to stroke, for those who skipped breakfast.</p> <p> </p> <p>For your heart health and so much more, breakfast appears to be the most important meal of the day. But what exactly should a healthy breakfast include? Blatner offers some ideas:</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Whole grains:</strong> Feel fuller for longer by eating whole-grain toast, whole-grain cereal or oatmeal.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Lean protein:</strong> Eggs are excellent, but not all eggs are equal. For example, Eggland’s Best eggs have 25 percent less saturated fat, more than double the omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E, and more than double the amount of vitamin B12. Eggland’s Best’s patented method of production and verification ensures that every Eggland’s Best egg has these superior qualities.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Fruits and vegetables:</strong> Fresh produce provides super-charged nutrients and plenty of fiber. Add a handful of berries, sliced avocado or spinach to your breakfast creations.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Low-fat dairy:</strong> Get your daily dose of calcium with low-fat yogurt, cheese or milk.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Brandpoint</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Highbrow Magazine</strong></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/breakfast" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">breakfast</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/eating-breakfast" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">eating breakfast</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/eggs" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">eggs</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/dairy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">dairy</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/oatmeal" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">oatmeal</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/yogurt" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">yogurt</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/fruit" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">fruit</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Brandpoint</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pop field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Popular:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">not popular</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-photographer field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Photographer:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Google Images (Creative Commons)</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bot field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Bottom Slider:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Out Slider</div></div></div> Sun, 02 Jun 2019 17:59:54 +0000 tara 8768 at https://www.highbrowmagazine.com https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/10006-yes-breakfast-really-most-important-meal#comments How to Age Gracefully Via a Healthy Diet https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/9823-how-age-gracefully-healthy-diet <div class="field field-name-field-cat field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/food" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Food</a></div></div></div><span class="submitted-by">Submitted by tara on Sun, 02/10/2019 - 13:46</span><div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="og:image rdfs:seeAlso" resource="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/1healthyfood_0.jpg?itok=RQRsxUha"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/1healthyfood_0.jpg?itok=RQRsxUha" width="480" height="320" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p> </p> <p>What if you were 60 but felt more like you were 30? Consider taking charge of your nutrition by adding in foods that help you feel decades younger.</p> <p> </p> <p>"What you eat and drink can have a tremendous impact on how you look and feel," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, registered dietitian and nutritionist. "Eating healthy is important at any age, but as you get older, certain foods can have a powerful impact on your overall well-being."</p> <p> </p> <p>Jackson Blatner’s top picks for food that fight aging include:</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Fish:</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>"Try substituting fish into meals a few times a week," says Jackson Blatner. "Americans tend to eat less fish than people in other parts of the world, and they are missing out on great-tasting protein that's packed with omega-3s."</p> <p> </p> <p>Omega-3s support brain and heart health, two important considerations as you age. In fact, Mayo Clinic doctors believe that omega-3s reduce the risk of dying of heart disease.</p> <p> </p> <p>"Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel are good options," she says. "Try buying wild-caught versus farm-raised when possible."</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Eggs:</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>"Many people don't realize the benefits of eating eggs, and when you choose the right type of egg, you get higher levels of omega-3s, B12, and vitamin E, all nutrients needed for healthy aging," says Jackson Blatner.</p> <p> </p> <p>She suggests Eggland’s Best eggs, which have 25 percent less saturated fat, more than double the omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E, and more than double the amount of vitamin B12. Eggland's Best has superior nutrition due to its proprietary all-vegetarian hen feed that contains healthy grains, canola oil and a wholesome supplement of rice bran, alfalfa, sea kelp and vitamin E.</p> <p> </p> <p>Our ability to absorb energizing B12 decreases with age, so getting B12 in places like EB eggs is important. Also important in EB eggs is the antioxidant vitamin E, which can act like an internal “sunscreen” to protect skin from sun damage and help skin age more gracefully.</p> <p> </p> <p>"A better egg equals a better recipe," she says. "Eggland's Best eggs are the only eggs I recommend to my clients and serve to my family — double the omega-3s will help promote healthier aging."</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/2foodageing.jpg" style="height:833px; width:625px" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Berries:</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>"Antioxidants protect your cells from damage and support a strong immune system," says Jackson Blatner. "This is incredibly important as you age so you can stay healthy and feel younger."</p> <p> </p> <p>Packed with vitamins C and E, berries are a superfood great for snacking and cooking. Try eating an array of colorful berries each week to give your body the antioxidants it craves. Blueberries are particularly well-known for their antioxidant properties.</p> <p> </p> <p>"The sky is the limit for berry versatility," she says. "Sprinkle some in yogurt, make a smoothie, add some to a salad or eat as a healthy dessert."</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Cruciferous vegetables:</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>"Pack your plate with cruciferous vegetables as you age," she says. "These are members of the cabbage family and include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale."</p> <p> </p> <p>These tasty greens are great fresh or cooked, providing plenty of fiber to help keep your digestion on track, which is a concern for many as they age. But there's more: The National Cancer Institute states that cruciferous vegetables may help reduce the risk of some cancers.</p> <p> </p> <p>"These dark-green powerhouses pack a nutritional punch that supports healthy aging, so discover recipes that include cruciferous vegetables and other 'anti-aging' foods."</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Brandpoint</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Highbrow Magazine</strong></p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/healthy-food" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">healthy food</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/ageing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ageing</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/omega-3" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">omega 3</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/dieting" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">dieting</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/eggs" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">eggs</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/dairy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">dairy</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/fruit" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">fruit</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/eating-healthy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">eating healthy</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/old-age" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">old age</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/mayo-clinic" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">mayo clinic</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Brandpoint</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pop field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Popular:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">not popular</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-photographer field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Photographer:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Brandpoint; Google Images</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bot field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Bottom Slider:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Out Slider</div></div></div> Sun, 10 Feb 2019 18:46:39 +0000 tara 8532 at https://www.highbrowmagazine.com https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/9823-how-age-gracefully-healthy-diet#comments Simple Nutrition: Benefits of Dairy in a Daily Diet https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/9228-simple-nutrition-importance-dairy-daily-diet <div class="field field-name-field-cat field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/food" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Food</a></div></div></div><span class="submitted-by">Submitted by tara on Wed, 07/04/2018 - 12:02</span><div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="og:image rdfs:seeAlso" resource="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/1dairy.jpg?itok=c2ACVmrZ"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/1dairy.jpg?itok=c2ACVmrZ" width="480" height="272" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p> </p> <p>When you sip a wholesome smoothie or savor a slice of cheesy pizza, do you ever wonder who’s behind your favorite dairy foods?</p> <p> </p> <p>More than 97 percent of dairy farms in the United States are family-owned and operated – and these families are as passionate about crafting simple, nutritious dairy products as you are about enjoying them. From dairy farmers to chefs, and everyone in between, the people who put delicious dairy foods on your table all share one undeniable characteristic: devotion.</p> <p> </p> <p>Other than the great taste and rich farming tradition behind dairy products, here are five more reasons to make dairy a regular part of your diet:</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>*Dairy is a local business:</strong> When you buy cheese, yogurt or milk, you’re supporting hard-working dairy farm families near you, which helps create jobs. The dairy products you’re feeding your family probably came from another hard-working family near you. And dairy farms are the ultimate local businesses: Most milk is made less than a two-hour drive from where it’s sold.</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/2dairy.jpg" style="height:242px; width:625px" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>*It’s natural:</strong> Real milk, cheese and butter taste the most natural because, well, they are the most natural. So, when you add a splash of milk to your morning coffee or top a baked potato with butter and sour cream, you’re keeping it real – and fresh.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>*Dairy is simple and affordable: </strong>At a time when eating healthy seems to be more and more complicated – and expensive – dairy remains simple and affordable. Why? A glass of milk is the No. 1 source of nine essential nutrients like calcium, vitamins D and B.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>*It’s good at any age:</strong> Dairy is beneficial for all ages, because it is a top food source for calcium, potassium and vitamin D – nutrients that many Americans, including children, are most lacking in their diets. And dairy products are safe to consume. “The bottom line is milk and other dairy foods are safe and nutritious foods you can recommend to others and enjoy with confidence,” confirms Dr. Gregory Miller, PhD, FACN, chief science officer at National Dairy Council.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>*Dairy packs a protein punch:</strong> Dairy is an important and widely available source of protein, which helps rebuild and repair muscle. If you took it out of your diet, you would need to eat up to 30 percent more plant proteins to match the quality of the protein that’s in dairy.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Learn more about the people behind your favorite dairy foods and the benefits of eating dairy at UndeniablyDairy.org/devoted.</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Brandpoint</strong></p> <p><a name="_GoBack" id="_GoBack"></a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/dairy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">dairy</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/dairy-products" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">dairy products</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/milk" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">milk</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/eggs" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">eggs</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/cheese" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">cheese</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/yogurt" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">yogurt</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/eating-dairy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">eating dairy</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Brandpoint</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pop field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Popular:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">not popular</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-photographer field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Photographer:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Dairy.org</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bot field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Bottom Slider:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Out Slider</div></div></div> Wed, 04 Jul 2018 16:02:57 +0000 tara 8125 at https://www.highbrowmagazine.com https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/9228-simple-nutrition-importance-dairy-daily-diet#comments
