My travels have recently taken me to Crete, Greece, Peru, Belize, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Spain, and wherever the muse calls.  My own paintings (<a href="http://www.sandrabertrand.com/">www.sandrabertrand.com</a> ) are often the result of these wanderings and I am an active member of the National Association of Women Artists, (NAWA). As Chief Art Critic for <em>Highbrow Magazine</em>, and a long time resident of New York City, I love covering the art scene in museums, galleries and venues, reading the pulse in one of the most fascinating places on the planet.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>What inspired you to become a writer?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>A love of theatre and an early acting and playwriting career taught me the beauty of interpreting the language of the greats—from Euripides to Tennessee Williams. Certainly, growing up in California’s central valley, I knew there were things on the other side of the Sierras to write about once I was old enough to travel there.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Who are a few of your favorite authors/photographers/artists/journalists?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>So many, but among authors, Edith Wharton, John Cheever, Edward Albee, Joan Didion, Flannery O’Connor, and recently Anthony Doerr and Elisabeth Strout.  It’s a pretty eclectic list.</p> <p> </p> <p><br /> <img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/1didion.jpg" style="height:486px; width:625px" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>What’s the worst job/assignment you’ve ever had?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Working in a soft ice cream joint as a teenager and spilling a milk shake in the cash register.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Which is your favorite city in the U.S.?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>New York City, especially Manhattan.  L.A. runs a close second.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>What’s your all-time favorite film?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><em>Casablanca</em> and anything by James M. Cain (<em>Double Indemnity</em>, <em>Mildred Pierce</em>)</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/mediumNewYorkSkyline_3.jpg" style="height:375px; width:600px" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Which newspapers/magazines/websites do you read regularly?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Vanity Fair, New Yorker, New York Times, National Geographic, Paris Review</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Would you rather become the next editor-in-chief of the <em>New Yorker</em> or become the next host of the “Daily Show”?</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Next host of the “Daily Show” if I could pick the guests.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>What are your favorite “highbrow” pastimes?    </strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Reading really good fiction and bios is high on the list, traveling almost anywhere, especially with water and warm climes, watching PBS Masterpiece Theatre, and Netflix series, going to plays, painting and playing with my cats.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/sandra-bertrand" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">sandra bertrand</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/highbrow-magazine" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Highbrow Magazine</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/media" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Media</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/art-critic" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">art critic</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/art" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">art</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/new-york-city" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">New York City</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Sandra Bertrand</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pop field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Popular:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">not popular</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bot field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Bottom Slider:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Out Slider</div></div></div> Sun, 06 Mar 2016 18:59:35 +0000 tara 6711 at https://www.highbrowmagazine.com https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/5646-meet-staff-highbrow-magazine-chief-art-critic-sandra-bertrand#comments
