The continent is on many people's travel bucket lists, but planning a trip can be intimidating.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>1. Make time for research</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>When deciding where to go and what to do, consult online resources and guidebooks to get a sense for what interests you most. Many African safari destinations have the Big Five — lions, elephants, rhino, leopard and buffalo — but more rare species like the endangered mountain gorilla are only found in a few countries, including Uganda. Uganda also offers some of the most diverse cultural experiences on the African continent, drawing visitors from around the world.</p> <p> </p> <p>With 10 distinct national parks, Uganda gives visitors the chance to explore myriad landscapes and natural habitats, each with its own impressive characteristics and wild inhabitants. Most people only have time to visit three or four parks in Uganda, so it's important to get a feel for which one may be right for you. Book a boat safari on the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park, or head out on a game drive in Kidepo Valley National Park to see elephants, giraffes, lions and more.</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/2uganda.jpg" style="height:229px; width:625px" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>2. Prioritize activities</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>When you start your research, you'll find there are countless things to see and do. That's why it's important to create a bucket list for your trip.</p> <p>How about the thrill of encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, tracking chimps through dense forest or catching a glimpse of the powerful tree-climbing lions? Birding opportunities are also rich considering more than half of Africa's bird species can be found in Uganda.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>3. Consult a trusted travel professional</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Especially if you're traveling to a foreign country for the first time, a travel expert can provide customized insight you won't find by doing searching solo. Plus, they can help craft the ideal itinerary by suggesting activities or VIP services you may not know about.</p> <p> </p> <p>For example, maybe kayaking Uganda's Lake Bunyonyi wasn't on your radar. Travel agents and tour operators can tell you why it should be. Want to upgrade your gorilla tracking experience? Travel professionals can arrange educational sessions with organizations like the Gorilla Doctors and their jungle veterinarians. They can help you book a rafting trip on the White Nile in Jinja, Uganda's adventure capital, or arrange a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/4uganda_pixabay.jpg" style="height:417px; width:625px" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>4. Go beyond wildlife</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>From the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains to the savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the lush banks of the Nile, Uganda's beautiful landscapes differ dramatically throughout the country. Wildlife flourishes, but there is so much more to explore.</p> <p>To make your trip complete, incorporate cultural activities into your itinerary. For example, hike to the top of a mountain near Kidepo Valley National Park and visit the Ik people, a centuries-old community maintaining their traditional way of life. Another opportunity is the Batwa Experience, where you can explore Uganda's forest with its original inhabitants. Finally, don't forget to spend a day in the capital city of Kampala.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Brandpoint</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Highbrow Magazine</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Image Sources:</strong></p> <p><strong>Brandpoint; Uganda Safari; <a href="https://pixabay.com/photos/africa-people-of-uganda-uganda-2665146/">Numbercfoto -- Pixabay</a> (Creative Commons); Nambasi (<a href="https://pixabay.com/photos/africa-people-of-uganda-uganda-2665146/">Pixabay</a>, Creative Commons). </strong></p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/uganda" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">uganda</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/kampala" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">kampala</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/visiting-uganda" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">visiting uganda</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/safari" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">safari</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/visting-africa" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">visting africa</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/travel/archive" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">travel</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/adventure-travel" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">adventure travel</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Brandpoint</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pop field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Popular:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">not popular</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-photographer field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Photographer:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Uganda Safaris; Google Images; Uganda Dispatch</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bot field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Bottom Slider:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Out Slider</div></div></div> Sun, 12 Aug 2018 20:17:03 +0000 tara 8197 at https://www.highbrowmagazine.com https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/9290-why-uganda-should-be-your-travel-bucket-list#comments Brainwashing the People of Uganda, One Prayer at a Time https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/3128-brainwashing-people-uganda-one-prayer-time <div class="field field-name-field-cat field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/film-tv" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Film &amp; TV</a></div></div></div><span class="submitted-by">Submitted by tara on Fri, 10/25/2013 - 09:19</span><div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="og:image rdfs:seeAlso" resource="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/1ugandafilm.jpg?itok=-EZXHr2m"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/1ugandafilm.jpg?itok=-EZXHr2m" width="480" height="322" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>  </p> <p> In the documentary <em>God Loves Uganda</em>, director Roger Ross Williams and crew peer into the evangelical crusade to infuse African culture with values of the Christian Right. The film focuses on the works of the International House of Prayer – an evangelical, Christian mission organization based in Kansas City. The International House of Prayer, or (oddly enough, IHOP), is one of the many conservative, American missions organizations working in the African continent. The organization has thousands of churches across the world, and though they send missionary groups around the globe, IHOP believes that Uganda is special.</p> <p>  </p> <p> “One of my greatest hopes [in Uganda] is to deposit what I have learned at IHOP. That DNA of prayer and worship,” one IHOP volunteer says while describing her missionary work in Uganda. “I think everyone wants to replicate their values and the core parts of who they are.” Some of the volunteers seem to have their heart in the right place, but it is unclear whether they realize that the drastic consequences of their missionary efforts have been anything but positive to the Ugandan community.</p> <p>  </p> <p> Representative Mike Pence is quoted in the film as saying, “It’s not enough that we send them money, but we must send them values.” Everyone has the right to their own religion, but there is a difference between sharing the values of one’s faith with others, and telling blatant lies in order to fight values that some consider to immoral.”</p> <p>  </p> <p> In the documentary, evangelicals like Pastor Scott Lively and Pastor Martin Ssempa also tell large groups of Ugandans fictitious statements about homosexuality. In a seminar at a hotel in Kampala, Pastor Lively – President of Abiding Truth Ministries— tells a group of people that homosexuals had taken over America and the United Nations, and now they are coming to take over Uganda by brainwashing their children.</p> <p> <img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/2ugandafilm.jpg" style="width: 336px; height: 500px;" /></p> <p>  </p> <p> What is more alarming is the response from Ugandans. Whether it comes from a place of deifying American Christians for saving the region from financial ruin or simple naivety, the people of Uganda take this message to heart. This sentiment has led to extreme discrimination and governmental retaliation against homosexuals. Uganda, essentially, became the testing place to preach the ideologies that extreme American conservatives may not be able to fully preach at home.</p> <p>  </p> <p> <em>God Loves Uganda</em> is a stunning divulgence of the missionary work in Africa. Despite what their intentions may be, IHOP and other evangelical missionary organizations have helped only in bringing hatred and prejudice to an already suffering nation.</p> <p>  </p> <p> <strong>Author Bio:</strong></p> <p> <em>Alex LaFosta is a contributing writer at</em> Highbrow Magazine.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/god-loves-uganda" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">god loves uganda</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/uganda" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">uganda</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/international-house-prayer" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">international house of prayer</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/brainwashing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">brainwashing</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/documentaries" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">documentaries</a></div><div class="field-item odd" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/church" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">the church</a></div><div class="field-item even" rel="dc:subject"><a href="/american-missionaries" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">american missionaries</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Alex LaFosta</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-pop field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Popular:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">not popular</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bot field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Bottom Slider:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Out Slider</div></div></div> Fri, 25 Oct 2013 13:19:26 +0000 tara 3736 at https://www.highbrowmagazine.com https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/3128-brainwashing-people-uganda-one-prayer-time#comments
